This year marks the remarkable 40th anniversary of Little Britches/Moodz Fashions. This reputed family-owned business has stood the test of time, all the while bringing style to downtown.
A Journey of Style and Community
The journey began when Leigh, the driving force behind it all, went shopping with her mother, and sister. It was a moment of serendipity. Leigh was pregnant with her first child, and the trio was out shopping for baby essentials. With a strong background in retail. Leigh recognized an opportunity, and the idea to open a store that catered to children’s and maternity products was born. They started small, with a modest shop next to the State Theater.
Fashion Enthusiast to Entrepreneur
Leigh shared that her passion for fashion and her experience working in retail, including stints at JCPenney’s and a local jewelry store, played a significant role in taking the leap into entrepreneurship. She had always been drawn to the world of fashion, and the prospect of owning her own store was a dream come true.
When asked about the challenges of starting a business. Leigh pointed to the difficulty of establishing a brand and reaching potential customers. In the early years, downtown was the main shopping district in town. This made it somewhat easier to get customers through her door. However, advertising and finding effective ways to connect with the target audience have always remained key challenges.
Evolution and Adaptation
Reflecting on four decades of success, Leigh emphasized the importance of evolution. Over the years, her store has adapted to changing customer needs. What began as a children’s and maternity store expanded to include juniors’ fashion, a shoe department, handbags, jewelry, accessories, and a dedicated section for prom gowns. Listening to customer feedback and identifying market gaps have been instrumental in surviving and thriving on Main Street.
Community Bonds
One of the most cherished aspects of owning the store for Leigh has been building lasting friendships with customers. She has witnessed generations of families grow. From expectant mothers shopping for baby clothes to those same children shopping for prom gowns. It’s a testament to the strong community bonds that can be forged on Main Street.
To aspiring entrepreneurs, Leigh offers valuable advice: “Do your research and find a niche.” She acknowledges the increasing competition from big-box stores but believes that independent boutiques and specialty shops still have a place in the market, especially when they cater to unique needs and provide personalized service.
Passing the Torch: The Future of Little Britches and Moodz Fashions
With a 40-year milestone, one might wonder if Leigh has inspired any family members to follow in her entrepreneurial footsteps. While her sons have pursued their own interests, she does have an employee who shows promise in continuing the legacy.
As for the future, Leigh plans to maintain the diverse mix of products that her store currently offers. She listens to her customers and adapts accordingly, ensuring that Little Britches and Moodz Fashions remains a shopping destination for all.
