Jessica Spagner: Transforming Healthcare with Ataraxic Mind and Massage

Ataraxic Mind and Massage was Founded and is owned by Jessica Spagner. Ataraxic Mind and Massage offers more than massages—it offers a new perspective on health and well-being.

A Journey from Traditional Medicine to Holistic Health

Jessica Spagner’s journey to opening Ataraxic Mind and Massage began after almost two decades as a laboratory medical scientist. “I spent nearly twenty years in the medical field, working in both rural and large hospital settings, as well as traveling for contract work in Wisconsin and Michigan,” Jessica recounts. Her experience involved running diagnostic tests essential for medical diagnoses. Despite finding her work rewarding, she began to question the effectiveness of the traditional healthcare system.

A Turning Point During the COVID-19 Pandemic

“The system is no longer as effective as it once was,” Jessica explains. “I realized that there’s a better way to help people by preventing illnesses rather than just treating symptoms after they’re already sick. I wanted to address chronic stress, dietary issues, lifestyle changes, and emotional balance.”

The turning point came during the COVID-19 pandemic. “COVID was really hard on everyone in the medical field. It exposed major flaws in the system and led to burnout among healthcare professionals. I saw chronic stress take over my coworkers, patients, and their families. It was clear that there had to be a better way to help people.”

Inspiration to Start a New Path

This epiphany led Jessica to a conversation with a family member about her future. “We were at a spa, discussing what I would do if I could do anything else. I realized I still wanted to help people, and that I could start with massage therapy to build trust and then have meaningful conversations about lifestyle changes.”

Jessica began her education in holistic health at Fort Hays State University in 2023. By May, she had graduated and was ready to launch her new venture. She initially rented space from a fellow student in Garden City and started building her clientele last summer.

Challenges of Creating a Business Plan

Opening a business came with its challenges. “Creating a business plan was nerve-wracking. We had to do one for school, and I took it seriously because I knew I’d be using it. It’s an ongoing process—constantly tweaking and adapting it to meet the market’s demands.”

Despite the challenges, Jessica finds immense satisfaction in her work. “Working face-to-face with clients is incredibly rewarding. Unlike my previous job, where I was behind the scenes, I now get to interact with people, get to know them, and help them consistently.”

Customized Services Offered

Ataraxic Mind and Massage offers a variety of services tailored to individual needs. “We provide customized therapeutic massages, including cupping, hot stones, deep tissue, and Swedish massages. Each session is individualized based on what your body needs that day. We also offer prenatal massages and a sinus and allergy package that includes ear candling, facial, and scalp massages. Additionally, we do corporate chair massage events.”

The pricing is designed to be accessible. A 30-minute customized therapeutic massage is $45, a 60-minute session is $60, and a 90-minute session is $120. Corporate chair massages are available at $75 per hour or $200 for a three-hour block.

Vision for the Future

Jessica’s vision for the future is to create a supportive environment where clients feel comfortable discussing their health and lifestyle goals. “I want people to come in not just for a massage but for open and honest conversations about improving their lives. Whether it’s support for quitting smoking, dietary advice, or simply having someone to talk to, I want to help individuals reach their full potential.”

For those hesitant to try massage therapy, Jessica offers reassurance. “We have a 30-minute introductory massage so you can see if it’s right for you. It’s a safe, comfortable way to experience the benefits of massage without committing to a longer session.”
