In the heart of Garden City, where the love of history and community intertwine, stands a cherished local gem. Traditions Soda & Sandwich Shop. Owned and lovingly run by Mike for nearly 14 years. This establishment has become a cornerstone of downtown life, offering not just food but a nostalgic journey back in time.
Mike’s Journey with Traditions
After 32 years in a body shop, Mike sought a healthier, less physically demanding occupation. While looking at a Jukebox for sale at Traditions, Mike learned that the restaurant was also for sale and two years later, Mike found himself the proud owner of jukebox and Traditions Soda & Sandwich Shop. It was a leap into an unknown world, but with guidance from the previous owner and a passion for vintage charm, Mike embraced the learning curve.
Traditions is more than a business, it is a slice of history. Originally Myers Ice Cream in 1925, the shop has evolved through various owners and names but has always retained its nostalgic essence. Mike’s dedication to preserving this heritage is evident in every corner of the shop. From the vintage decor to the pictures hung on the wall and the old school music playing in the background
A New Battle: Cancer
Today, Mike faces a personal battle that threatens not just his health, but the future of Traditions. A sudden diagnosis of colon cancer has brought unexpected challenges, both physically and financially.
It began with seemingly minor stomach issues that escalated rapidly, leading to a shocking diagnosis. One Friday evening, Mike struggled to eat a meal, which was highly unusual for him. By the next morning, he couldn’t keep any food down and soon developed severe flu-like symptoms. The situation worsened, prompting Mike to drive himself to the emergency room on a Sunday afternoon. By early Monday morning, he was undergoing emergency surgery to address a complete stomach blockage. This sudden health crisis has profoundly affected Mike.
His health has made it more difficult for him to manage Traditions Soda & Sandwich Shop as he had before. Despite this, he continues to work hard every day. Going into work like usual, He receives chemo treatment at the hospital and then goes into work when he is done. Mike remains hopeful, bolstered by the unwavering support of his customers and the dedication of his employees.
A Call for Support
Mike’s ability to maintain the shop and manage necessary repairs has been impacted. First and foremost a crack on the exterior wall has put the foundation of the building in jeopardy. Secondly the list of urgent repairs is growing, such as equipment that needs to be updated and with it, the financial strain.
Mike’s dedication to keeping prices affordable for families means that raising funds for repairs through price hikes is something he would rather not do. This is where the community’s support becomes crucial.
