Toxica Boutique: Empowering Women, One Unique Outfit at a Time

Growing up, Brenda’s parents didn’t have much. They came from a small village in Mexico with limited opportunities. When they moved to the United States they settled in Phoenix, Arizona, where Brenda received her education, fulfilling one of her parents’ dreams. After graduating high school, she moved to Garden City, Kansas, to live with her aunt. It was there that she met her husband, and they quickly fell in love and got married.

Dreams of Entrepreneurship

Owning a business was never something Brenda imagined for herself. She thought it was an impossible dream, something only achievable for those with a lot of money or a wealthy background. She was her own worst critic, placing mental obstacles in her path. However, she began to realize that if she truly wanted it, she could make it happen.

After Brenda and her husband got married, they moved to Johnson Kansas, a rural area with fewer things to do than what she was used to. This gave her time to reflect on her aspirations. Whenever she visited stores, she often felt like the salespeople were more interested in making a sale than helping her find what truly suited her. She figured others might feel the same way. Brenda wanted to create a store where customers felt genuinely supported in their purchasing decisions, and thus, Toxica Boutique was born.

Overcoming Challenges

Starting Toxica Boutique in February 2020 was no easy feat. Brenda faced numerous challenges, from sourcing inventory to learning the ins and outs of running a business. She made many mistakes along the way. What kept her going was the unwavering support of her husband, who believed in her even when she doubted herself. The joy she saw in her customers when they left her store happy, and the photos they sent of themselves looking great in their new outfits, made all the hard work worthwhile.

Why Toxica Boutique?

The name “Toxica Boutique” is a playful nod to a nickname Brenda’s husband gave her. Jokingly, he calls her a “toxica” – a term often used to describe a woman who likes to spend a little too much money or play by her own rules. They embraced this fun play on words, and it resonated with their customers. The name captures the vibrant and empowering atmosphere of the store.

At Toxica Boutique, customers can find a wide range of products, from clothing and jewelry to weight loss vitamins and shapewear. Sizes range from small to 5XL, ensuring that everyone can find something that makes them feel beautiful. What sets the boutique apart is its commitment to providing a unique shopping experience. Brenda limits the quantity of each style to ensure her customers feel unique and special in their purchases.

A Personal Touch

Brenda’s own struggles with depression and weight gain influenced her approach to the business. Brenda remembers gaining weight shortly after getting married, she became overweight and depressed, feeling uncomfortable in her own skin. Opening Toxica Boutique was a turning point. She wanted to create a store that catered to everyone, from extra small to 5XL, helping people feel beautiful regardless of their size. Her goal is to support her customers in feeling good about themselves and making purchase decisions that enhance their confidence.

Balancing Life and Business

Balancing her roles as a wife, mother, and business owner is challenging for Brenda. She lives in Johnson and drives an hour and a half each way to her store in Garden City. Her day starts early, juggling household chores, taking care of her 10-month-old son, and managing the boutique. Some days are harder than others, but the support of her husband and the joy she sees in her customers keep her going.

Brenda dreams of taking Toxica Boutique to the next level. She hopes to expand and eventually franchise the business, helping other aspiring business owners navigate the steps to success. Though she is the first in her family to own a business, she believes in the power of perseverance and the importance of support.

Advice for Aspiring Entrepreneurs

To anyone dreaming of starting their own business but feeling scared or unsure, Brenda says: what do you have to lose? If you do nothing, you stay where you are. But if you take that leap of faith, you have the potential to progress. Don’t let negative thoughts hold you back. Take things one step at a time, and you’ll figure it out as you go. Surround yourself with supportive people, and believe in yourself.

At Toxica Boutique, Brenda offers more than just products. She offers an experience. Her customers are like family, and she strives to make everyone feel welcome and special. Whether they’re looking for the perfect outfit or a boost in confidence, Toxica Boutique is there for them.
