Smith Auto Truck Parts Brings Advanced Solutions to Garden City

Smith Auto Truck Parts legacy has been passed down through four generations of the Smith family. Brad Smith, co-manager of Smith Auto Truck Parts, and his brother Doug are preparing to carry the torch as the fourth-generation owners whenever their parents, Rob and Judy Smith, decide to retire. This family-owned business, with deep roots in Garden City, Kansas, has been a part of the community since its founding in 1939 by Brad’s great-grandfather. Over the years, it has evolved from a small operation into a leader in the automotive recycling industry.

Humble Beginnings

Founded as Riverside Wrecking in 1939, the business started with a simple concept: towing vehicles and selling parts. Over the decades, it has transformed into a data-driven, efficient operation that serves not just the local community but customers across the country. Brad recalls the early days of working at the family business in high school, manually cataloging parts as the company transitioned from paper to computers in the mid-’90s. This was just the beginning of Smith Auto’s evolution, with each generation pushing the business forward.

“When I came back to the business in 2015, I assumed the role of sales manager. I handle sales, shipping, and quality control while Doug manages the buying, dismantling, and quality control as well. We complement each other, which helps us run the business smoothly without stepping on each other’s toes,” says Brad.

A Return Home

Brad’s journey back to the family business wasn’t something he originally anticipated. After graduating from high school, Brad pursued higher education. He earned an associate’s degree from Garden City Community College and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Kansas. He then spent a decade in Kansas City working for a company there, rising through the ranks to hold various leadership positions.

In 2015, his father Rob called, asking if he’d be willing to return to Garden City to help after purchasing the business from his grandparents. Brad was newly married at the time. He saw this as an opportunity to return to his roots and raise a family in a tight-knit community. “I never imagined myself here, but the opportunity presented itself. I always wanted to see the business reach 100 years, and I knew this was a chance to make that dream a reality,” Brad says.

The Evolution of the Industry

Since its founding, Smith Auto Truck Parts has undergone significant changes. One of the biggest advancements has been the integration of data into daily operations. “The data behind the business is something we never imagined,” Brad explains. “Today, we use data to track parts, understand pricing, and make better decisions. This shift has propelled our growth over the last five years.”

The business’s commitment to using data-driven strategies has helped it stay competitive and ensure that customers receive quality, tested parts. “The days of working with just our hands are over. Now, data tells me which vehicle to dismantle next, what price points to set, and how to scrap materials effectively. It’s all about making smart, informed decisions,” Brad says.

A Trusted Partner in the Community

In recent years, the business has expanded its reach by joining Team PRP, a national network of premium recycled parts providers. This allows Smith Auto to source and sell parts across the country while maintaining the highest quality standards. “We’re able to get parts from trusted recyclers all over the country, and that’s huge for a place like Garden City. We’re shipping parts to all 50 states and even internationally,” Brad says.

One of the cornerstones of Smith Auto Truck Parts is its commitment to providing quality recycled OEM parts at a fraction of the cost of new parts. Brad takes pride in knowing that customers can trust the parts they purchase. “We offer long-term warranties on many parts and even labor warranties on larger components like engines. It’s all about giving customers peace of mind,” he says.

A Culture of Family and Community

For Brad and Doug, creating a positive work environment is essential. “We’re hands-off managers, and we believe in giving our employees the flexibility to succeed. Many of our team members have been with us for years, and we’ve built a culture where people enjoy coming to work,” Brad explains.

That sense of family extends beyond the employees to the customers. Brad wants people to feel comfortable coming to Smith Auto Truck Parts, whether they’re buying a part for their car or just seeking advice. “Our reputation is everything, and we stand behind our products. If something goes wrong, we’ll take care of it. That’s why we’ve been in business for 85 years.”

A Bright Future Ahead

As Smith Auto Truck Parts looks toward its 100th anniversary, Brad and Doug are committed to continuing the legacy of hard work and innovation that their great-grandfather started. “We’ve always been a family that knows how to work hard, and that’s something we’ll never lose. I’m excited to see what the future holds for this business and our community,” Brad says.

In a world where businesses come and go, Smith Auto Truck Parts stands as a testament to the power of family, dedication, and the willingness to adapt and grow. As Brad says, “When you stop growing, that’s when you start dying. We’re always striving to be better, for ourselves, for our employees, and for our customers.”
